There has been a massive carnage in Illela and Goronyo Local Governments Areas of Sokoto State. And not less than 57 slain inhabitants of the two local governments areas have been buried in the last 4 days, even as the death toll keeps rising unchecked. Shockingly enough Governor Tambuwal said he never got wind of the dastardly act until he visited the affected areas on Wednesday.

On Thursday morning, Governor Tambuwal’s spokesperson, Muhammad Bello, Governor Tambuwal’s spokesperson told the BBC Hausa that the Governor got to know about the massive murder when he visited the two Local Government Areas.

Mr Bello said dozens were injured, including a village Head, the injured victims according to him are receiving treatment at health facilities and in their houses.

He said the gunmen raided Illela town and at least seven villages in the suburbs.

The Governor however condemned the killings and commended the security forces and registered volunteer groups complimenting the efforts of the security agencies.

Goronyo and Illela are among council areas where the state government has shut down telecommunications networks and banned weekly markets to curb the activities of bandits.

However, reprisal attacks involving bandits and vigilante groups have intensified in Sokoto.

Bandits have been reported to have established administration in many rural communities in the state, imposing taxes on villagers.
