The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kano State Command on Friday said it arrested one Umar Alhassan, 31, for allegedly impersonating the Corps.
The Public Relations Officer of the Corps, DSC Ibrahim Idris-Abdullahi, who disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen in Kano, said Alhassan also extorted money from a man travelling from Lagos to Borno state.
He said on Sept.26, at about 9:00 p.m the Command received the suspect, of Unguwar Rimi Quarters Kumbotso Local Government Kano, from the Nigeria Police Mariri Outpost Kano for criminal extortion and impersonation.
“The suspect claimed to be a staff of NSCDC Kano Command and tried to force the victim to sale his handset to him at the cost of N20, 000 while the market value of the phone is N80, 000.
“When the victim refused, the suspect requested the sum of N10, 000 as payment for his bail.
“In the process, the parent of the victim sent the sum of N5, 000 through the account number of the suspect which he refused to collect.
This led to the attention of the police, and he was then arrested and handed over to NSCDC Kano,” he said.
Idris-Abdullahi said that items recovered from the suspect include 12 different types of handsets, two MP radio, the sum of N35,945, NSCDC ID Card with the name Umar A. Alhassan, Service No. 31328 Rank CA III, Blood group O+ and uniform.
