…Visits COREN, CORBON, and ARCON to Foster Collaboration on Training, Standards, and Compliance
The Directorate of Inspection and Compliance (DI&C) under the Office of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) on 14 January 2025, commenced a familiarization tour of professional engineering and built environment bodies, starting with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
The team, led by Major General IM Jallo, Director of DI&C, was warmly received by the President of COREN, Engr. Professor Sadiq Zubair Abubakar, FNSE. During the visit, Prof. Abubakar highlighted COREN’s regulatory roles in Nigeria’s engineering sector and assured the Directorate of the Council’s support and cooperation when required.
Major General Jallo, in his remarks, emphasized the importance of collaboration in training and capacity building. He also advocated for the enforcement of strict rules to mitigate the activities of unprofessional contractors and technicians. Prof. Abubakar supported the stance, adding that adherence to Nigerian codes and standards is critical to ensuring discipline and preventing infractions in the building sector.
The DI&C team proceeded to the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), where they were received by the Registrar, Bldr. Adetunji Adeniran, and key council members. Bldr. Adeniran reiterated the vital role of builders in achieving safe and sustainable projects. He emphasized the importance of ensuring builders’ documentation aligns with standards and offered to provide DI&C staff with opportunities for capacity building through CORBON’s calendar of events.
In the final leg of the tour, the team visited the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON), where they were hosted by the President, Arc (Sir) Gabriel Oladipupo Ajayi, the Registrar, and council members. The discussions centered on professional development, industry trends, and strategies for tackling challenges in the built environment. Arc. Ajayi pledged ARCON’s support for the Directorate in professional networking and capacity-building initiatives.
Major General Jallo expressed his gratitude for the warm reception, fruitful deliberations, and knowledge shared at all the institutions visited. He acknowledged the importance of the insights gained in broadening the Directorate’s perspective on engineering and the built environment.
