The new commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Imo, Mr Basil Igwebueze, has vowed to vehemently fight illegal oil bunkering and other vices in the state.
The Commandant said this while addressing newsmen in Owerri on Monday.
Igwebueze, who assumed office on 3 January 2025, said the fight against illegal bunkering was in line with the mandate of the corps as statutorily enshrined in its enabling laws.

He regretted that illicit oil trade has resulted in environmental degradation and a dwindling economy and vowed to fight it head-on.
He said: “We cannot afford to tolerate a dwindling economy and a degrading environment occasioned by illegal bunkering.”
He vowed to address the situation with the aim of restoring normalcy so that the economy can soar.
The Commandant added that the command under his watch would ensure that unregistered private guard companies do not operate in the state.
According to him, the command would, in line with its mandate, synergise with other security agencies while providing the state government with reliable intelligence.
He said: “We will provide requisite, credible and reliable intelligence that will help the government to address the fundamental challenges in the area of insecurity so that citizens can go about their legitimate businesses without fear of attack.”
He, however, advised staff members of the command to remain professional and ethical in the discharge of their constitutional duties.
