BREAKING: Gunshots As Security Operatives Foil Riot At Benin Prisons

A joint team of security operatives on Thursday foiled a riot that could have resulted to a jailbreak at the Custodial Centre of Nigerian Correctional Service, Sapele road in Benin City, Edo State.

Recall that the facility along with Oko medium Custodial Centre in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State whose walls are being reenforced by the federal government, was breached and several inmates were set free by hoodlums while some of thinmates were either killed or recaptured by security agents.

Mr. Aminu S. Suleman Command Public Relations officer of Correctional Service of Edo State Command who conformed the incident in a statement, said the pandemonium broke out at 12.30p.m on Thursday.

He revealed that a protest between the convicted inmates and some awaiting trial inmates especially the recaptured escapees started protest which led to a confrontation between them.

Aminu, commended sister security agencies who drafted their personnel around the outer perimeter fence to compliment Correctional Service Armed Squad personnel to ensure total security of the custodial Centre, amidst tension in Benin Metropolis for several hours.

He urged members of the public to go about their normal business without fear, adding that investigation into the incident has been instituted by the Controller to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the disturbance.

According to the statement, “At about 12.30pm, some awaiting trial inmates especially the recaptured escapees started protest which led to a confrontation between them and the convicted inmates. Reinforcement was immediately mobilized from the State headquarters to enforce law and order.

“The situation has been completely controlled and the Custodial Centre is calm. There was no escape of any inmates or death.
Sister security agencies have showed solidarity by drafting their men around the outer perimeter fence to compliment Correctional Service Armed Squad personnel to ensure total security of the custodial Centre.

“The Controller of Corrections Felix Lawrence wishes to assure the general public that they should go about their normal business without any fear.

“Meanwhile, investigation into the incident has been instituted by the Controller to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the disturbance”, according to Aminu.
