FG speaks on alleged arrest of Nigerians in Libya over CAF’s verdict

The Federal Government has disputed claims that Nigerians were being targeted for arrest in Libya following the Confederation of African Football (CAF) decision to award three points and three goals in favour of Nigeria and against the North African country.

Eche Abu-Obe, Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said this in a statement he issued assurance on Sunday in Abuja.

He said contrary to a report in a national newspaper, Nigerians are not being harassed in Libya as a result of sanctions on the country by CAF.

Abu-Obe said, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to convey that, as of the time of making this statement, Nigerians in Libya are going about their daily activities, devoid of any form of harassment by Libyan authorities.

“This is following the verdict of CAF, which indicted the Libyan Football Association for their ill-treatment of the Nigerian team and officials while in Libya for a Nations Cup Qualifying Match.

“This is contrary to a publication in the Punch newspaper on Nov. 3.

He also promised that the Federal Government will continue to prioritise the wellbeing of Nigerians wherever they are found in the statement.

The government also pledged to continue safeguarding the wellbeing of the citizenry at all times

“The ministry wishes to reiterate that the wellbeing of Nigerian citizens anywhere in the world is a top priority of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and will continue to strive to safeguard it at all times.”
