In a tragic incident on Friday, October 4, terrorists launched deadly attacks in Katsina State, killing nine security operatives and leaving one seriously injured. The ambushes took place in the Faskari and Matazu Local Government Areas, both regions troubled by ongoing terrorist activity.
The victims were members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps (CWC) and Vigilante Corps, who were ambushed in separate incidents while providing security for local farmers.
According to sources, the first attack occurred between Yankara and Faskari on Friday evening, where members of the Community Watch Corps were ambushed and killed. Among the victims were Mubarak Shu’aibu Labo, Muhammad Hassan, and an unidentified officer. Additionally, two vigilante officers, Babangida Bature (also known as Babangida Doza) and Ibrahim Rishi, were also killed in the attack.
A second attack took place that same evening in Matazu Local Government, where terrorists ambushed a group of vigilantes on their way from Gwarjo to Yalwa. Three officers were killed, and one sustained serious injuries in the assault.
Jamilu Aliyu, Secretary of the Vigilante group in Matazu, confirmed the attack.
In response to the tragic incidents, Governor Dikko Umaru extended his condolences to the families of the fallen security operatives. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula, the governor praised the courage and sacrifice of the operatives, stating that their actions helped save lives and protect farmers.
“These brave men are true heroes of our state,” the statement read. “Their sacrifice in service to Katsina will never be forgotten, and we stand with their families during this difficult time.”
The attacks have raised concerns about the increasing insecurity in Katsina, particularly in regions like Faskari and Matazu, which have been plagued by terrorist activity.
