The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says no fewer than 100 families have been displaced by flooding in Gantsa, Buji LGA of Jigawa state.

In a statement on Tuesday, Badaruddeen Tijjani, NSCDC’s spokesperson, said the families were forced to evacuate their homes after heavy rainfall on Sunday.

He said no casualties have been recorded, adding that the local government, security agencies, and state emergency management agency were assisting the families.

“We are still gathering information on the matter. The affected households have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety, leaving their belongings in the water,” he said.

“The downpour has left many families homeless after causing significant damage to their homes.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the rains led to widespread flooding, which overwhelmed the community’s drainage systems.

“Rescue operations are ongoing, and temporary shelters are being set up in safer locations to accommodate the displaced persons.

“NSCDC disaster management personnel have also been deployed to strategic locations to secure the property of the victims against theft.”

He advised residents to remain vigilant during the rainy season to “avoid further tragedies”.
