  • Kwara Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has sensitised stakeholders on how to ensure safety and curb insecurity in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the command organised the programme for community leaders, transporters, community police (metro) and individual volunteers on Tuesday in Ilorin.

The NSCDC Commandant in the state, Muhammed Ibrahim, decried the increasing rate of banditry, kidnapping, robbery and vandalism in the state, adding that it was worrisome.

The commandant, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Lawrence Idowu, said that the purpose of the sensitisation was to brainstorm on the issue of insecurity, especially in rural areas.

He, however, said that with the assistance of stakeholders, the problem of insecurity would be addressed, while assuring the people of the state that the corps would provide 24-hour security.

In his remarks, an NSCDC official, ACC Yusuf Olatunji, described banditry as any form of action that could lead to breakdown of law and order in the society, such as robbery, kidnapping and other illegal activities.

Olatunji, who said that forms of banditry could be social, political and rural, added that part of the cause could be abject poverty, political influence and ‘quick money’ syndrome.

He suggested better standard of living, provision of employment for the youth and security consciousness by the people could be part of the solutions to the issue of insecurity.

“Leaders in each community should be conscious of new faces in their areas, while roaming about by youths, especially herdsmen in the name of cattle rearing and monitoring of uncompleted buildings around residential areas should be controlled.

“Clearing of bushes around the house to avoid using them as hideouts, ensuring that security lights are on at night and the rooms light to be off to protect the occupants and prevent peeping by intruders,” he said.

Also speaking, Alhaji Abubakar Yusuf, representing Tebesun community of Ilorin South, said that the programme was educative and impressive.

“We now know how to identify bandits and how to nip banditry in the bud in the state.

We will work with NSCDC and other communities to curb insecurity,” he said.

Yusuf also urged residents to put barricades in the areas for restricted movements and avoid night crawling.
