Officials of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kano State Command, have arrested one Umar Alhassan for the alleged extortion and impersonation committed against a passenger while travelling from Lagos to Maiduguri, Borno State.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSC Ibrahim Abdullahi, made this known in a statement on Friday.
He said Alhassan, a resident of Unguwar Rimi, Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state, claimed to be a staff member of the NSCDC and tried to force the victim to sell his handset to him at the cost of N20,000 while the market value of the phone was N80,000.
“When the victim refused, the suspect requested the sum of N10,000 as payment of his bail.
“The parents of the victim sent the sum of N5,000 through the account number of the suspect, which he refused and policemen were later alerted,” he said.
He revealed that the suspect was arrested and consequently handed over to the NSCDC, for investigation and prosecution.
The PRO further said the items recovered from the suspect included 12 different types of handsets; two radio sets, N35,945 cash, the NSCDC ID Card with Umar Alhassan with Service No. 31328; Blood group O+ and Rank CA III.
