Gunmen kidnap Catholic priest in Anambra

Gunmen have kidnapped a Catholic priest, Rev Fr Stanislaus Mbamara, in Nnewi, Anambra State.

The young priest was said to have been abducted Friday evening, while driving from Awka the state capital to Nnewi, where he serves.

Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, who confirmed the incident in a statement signed by the Chancellor, Fr. Raphael Ezeogu, called for prayers for the priest’s release, expressing hope he would come out unhurt.

The statement reads: “Our priest, Rev. Fr. Stanislaus Mbamara, a student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, was kidnapped yesterday (Friday) evening, on his way from Awka to Nnewi.

“Let’s storm heaven with humble and insistent prayers for his quick release in sound health of mind and body. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Help of Christians, pray with and for us.”

The statement was however silent over details of the kidnap, nor whether the abductors had been contacted.

Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga said he was yet to receive the report, promising to make enquiry.

“There is no such report before me, please.
I will make enquiry,” he said.
